This is an exam that utilizes ultrasound (no radiation) to diagnose different pathologies in the abdomen, the pelvis, the thyroid ant testicular glands, and to sometimes complement a mammography for the breast.
PREPARATION
Abdominal ultrasound :
DO NOT eat or drink at least 8 hours prior to the exam.
If you appointment is in the afternoon, a light breakfast (toast, jam and coffee or juice) is permitted at 6H00 AM.
Pelvic ultrasound :
Drink 3 large glasses (700 ml) of water, juice of coffee etc. 1 hr 30 BEFORE your appointment to fill your bladder. You can eat but do not urinate before the exam.
Obstetrical ultrasound (before 14 weeks) :
Drink 3 large glasses (700 ml) of water, juice or coffee etc. 1hr 30 BEFORE your appointment to fill your bladder. You can eat but do not urinate before you exam.
*If you also have an abdominal ultrasound with your pelvic exam, do NOT eat before for at least 8 hours.
Ultrasound of THYROÏD, of TESTICLES,
of BREASTS, of SUPERFICIAL TISSUES (arms/legs) :
No special preparation necessary.

Why do I have to pay for my ultrasound?
ANSWER :
Ultrasound exams done in clinics are NOT covered by your health insurance card (RAMQ). You must therefore pay for the exam or have your privat insurance pay for it.

When will my doctor get the results of the ultrasound?
ANSWER :
He/she should get the results within a week. Some could even be faxed within 24 hours if your doctor has specifically asked for an urgent result.
