


This exam studies your small bowel by opacifying it with baryum. X-Rays are taken every 20 minutes after you have drink the baryum.
It takes from 1 to 3 hours, depending on how fast the baryum reaches your large intestines.
If your procedure is in the A M :
Do not eat or drink at least 8 hours before the exam.
If your procedure is in the PM :
A light breakfast is permitted at 6h00 AM
(one toast, jam and juice or coffee).
Avoid corn, beets.
Avoid medications that contain any narcotics or medications.
That will affect bowel motility, unless specified by you doctor.

How long is the exam?
ANSWER :
This a highly variable. It depends mainly on how fast your small bowel moves. The average is between 1 and 3 hours.
Please bring a robe, slippers, a book, magazine, etc. so you may wait comfortably.
This exam is covered by your RAMQ card. You must of course bring a valid card, and your prescription, signed by the doctor.
