Abdominal and/or Pelvic Ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound is used to obtain images of organs such as liver, bladder, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, and aorta. The evaluation of the digestive tract is limited and applies only to certain situations. X-rays are not used during this exam, but rather ultrasound is emitted by a probe in the form of short pulses

Pelvic ultrasound is used especially in the evaluation of the bladder, gynecological organs in women, and prostate in men.

Abdominal ultrasound and pelvic ultrasound exams are simple, painless, and without side effects!

  • Duration of the exam

    - 5 to 15 minutes for the exam

    - You should allow 30 to 60 minutes for the entire duration of your visit.

    - In the case of a pelvic ultrasound, you should allow more time if your bladder is not full enough.

  • Cost of the exam

    This exam is covered by the RAMQ

  • Registration

    You must register at the front desk upon arrival at the clinic.


    Make sure to bring the following with you:

    - Your health insurance card (RAMQ)

    - A valid prescription signed by your doctor


    To avoid any delays, we recommend you arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.

  • Preparation

    - Abdominal and Renal Ultrasound: Do not eat or drink anything for 6 hours preceding the exam.


    - Abdominal and/or Pelvic Ultrasound: Do not eat anything for 6 hours preceding the exam. Empty your bladder 90 minutes before the exam and take 3 large glasses of fluid (750 ml or 24 oz in total). Do not urinate until the exam.


    - Ultrasound pelvic or obstetric ultrasound (at 13 weeks or less): Empty your bladder 90 minutes before the exam and take 3 large glasses of fluid (750 ml or 24 oz in total). Do not urinate until the exam. Eating is permitted.

  • The exam

    After registering, a member of our team will escort you to the changing room where you will put on an exam gown.


    You will then be taken to the exam room, where you will be asked to lie down. The radiologist will apply a gel to the area to be examined and will take pictures using an ultrasound probe. You may be asked to take deep breaths.


    It is important to carefully follow the instructions in order to carry out the exam correctly and to ensure quality images.

  • Results

    For all exams, the radiologist must first analyze the numerous images obtained before making the final report. After the exam, the radiologist, at his/her discretion, may give you a brief preview of the result. Your doctor will receive a written copy of the final report within 24-48 hours.
